Guy doing a Tophatter ReviewHere’s my Tophatter review. This is by far the coolest looking auction site I have ever seen. It’s obvious that they’ve spent an enormous amount of time and money to create a user interface that is completely different from anything else on the internet. You enter one of their online auctions as an avatar that looks something like a cartoon character from South Park. The room is filled with others like you including an auctioneer. In the upper right of the screen photos of the item up for sale rotate with the current bid underneath. It’s fun without being overly gimmicky. But fun and business are often tricky to combine effectively. Is Tophatter able to pull it off?

The Tophatter Review

After looking around the site I could see that there are quite a few active bidders.  I went and watched several auctions and the rooms were always full. Everyone in the room is able to talk with the seller via a chat section under the auction scene. There was a lot of chatter going on. Some of the items only got one or two bids, some got a lot more. At this point I’m pretty intrigued because it looks like they’re really on to something here. But before I’m ready to jump in and start selling (or even bidding) I wanted to do just a little more research.  Here’s what I came up with.

A screenshot of a Tophatter auction in progress.

What Some Other Tophatter Reviews Have Said

Reviews on the web are mixed. Some people like the site and some people really don’t.

Mei at Pragmatic Designer said: “Tophatter’s 10% cut is steep, but considering that they provide you an instant sale, that’s not too much to ask. I had some short time for chatting with people in real time, and even had some people convert into website visitors.” – Score one for people who like Tophatter.

Jane at Jenny and Teddy remarked: “Think of it as a clearance sale – if you want to move some items, and move them fast, Tophatter is the way to go. You won’t make much of a profit, but you’ll make room for new products.” – I’d have to call that comment a tie.

Jessica Posted at Webutation: “Tophatter policies change on a whim so as a seller and buyer you get screwed out of money/products/ and your time. I can’t tell you how many times as a seller I have been forced to give refunds for items that were sold months ago. Then the fees. OMG THE FEES ARE INSANE – you could be paying up to 25% of your product SELLING price and usually a minimum of $12.” -Sadly there are dozens of reviews like this one.

Somebody else was so mad they started a Truth about Tophatter Facebook Group. It has 194 members who are so upset about the site that they felt compelled to join and share their experiences. There’s also a smaller Facebook group called Stop Tophatter Selling Counterfeit that asserts that Tophatter allows fake items on in it’s auctions.

In the course of my research I noticed something else. Many of the positive Tophatter reviews out there had this at the bottom: “Disclosure: I received compensation for this publication.” I found that or something very similar at over a dozen blogs. I think that’s kind of odd but I don’t know what to make of it.

Tophatter Review Conclusion

The thing that most people seem upset about are the fees that were recently raised. Commissions on a Tophatter Auction range from 10% to 15% plus a $.25 to $2.75 scheduling fee that is charged whether or not your item sells. Source: Tophatter Fees from their website.  That’s more than the competition and it does seem a bit out of line for an new auction site. The next largest complaints from sellers were low selling prices on their items and extremely short auction times where they feel nobody had a chance to bid.

As a final bit of research I decided to look at their rating at the Better Business Bureau. There are 22 complaints against them. Mostly about poor customer service. If you are interested you can read them yourself here.

I had originally intended to list one of my items and write about the experience as part of this Tophatter review. But after learning about the difficulties others have had and in light of the high selling fees I decided against it. However, I really do like the way this site looks and how it works. If they can improve their reputation and make the fees reasonable I would be willing to give it a try in the future.

  1. Just Horrible. A total negative experience. Holding my money till the product is sent back. The problem is they sent me something that was broke, wrapped up in a ball, forced into a bag and sent to me. And yet I have to wait on my money.
The pictures showed that the products were broke.

  2. ps I am wondering if the items the charge card company paid will arrive or not and if they will be what was shown on the internet

  3. some of the item I bid on my charge card company would not pay. I called them and they said the ones refused to pay were fraud. others they accepted, told to delete the fraud items and I did, sure would like to know if sellers are checked out. items they paid I am waiting to see them,

  4. I’ve bought several items on Tophatter. A very few of them were okay; the others were just plain trash. Jewelry that would serve as a Halloween costume prop. Junk that even Walmart wouldn’t carry. It’s a scam and not worth anyone’s time.

  5. I ordered a camcorder, for 22 dollars and it might be worth 5.00. Problem is after I opened it seemed like everything was there except the most important thing, Memory Card, its probably still back in China. Can’t get a phone, (they are pretty smart nobody can call them to complain) Needless to say I’m Pissed. Don’t think I will be lookinlg up their web site any more.

  6. TH are very misleading on their product being real most are plastic or cheaply made all come from China the only items I enjoyed are the Dallas Cowboys Superbowl rings, replicas but pretty sharp, but do not buy their jewelry

  7. did anyone else get their card compromised and/or lost money?? Dave,

  8. I was on Top Hat Auction site, and made purchases and got what I expected. They do not list the items well enough to sometime identify the product. BUT on 7/6, 7/7.7/10,7/31.;8/1,8/14.and8/15 when I realized my credit card got compromised for charges from 1.99 to 99.00 I immediately stopped everything, locked my card and Captital One refunded all the fraudulent charges. I don’t dare go on again. Buyer Beware. The stuff you buy is “You Get What You Pay For” so enjoy.

  9. I found the site by accident and immediately got caught up in the fun of it..I thought I was getting a great deal on stuff..NOT first of all, the China companies get free shipping from their government. They KNOW that if you do not like your item, it will cost you 2x what it’s worth to send it back, so they end up keeping your money and you got the crap for the garbage. Everything I bought other than jewelry was pure junk..plastic from dollar store. Tophatter does not check vendors quality. If China vendors are allowed to sell, they should be made to send return postage for refunds…otherwise they can continue to scam USA with no consequence. The jewelry is ok for cheap stuff..I got 4 pieces of clothes 2 were fine and 2 were junk. You can find the same stuff alot cheaper elsewhere on the web and on ebay. For me, I am staying away from Tophatter crap..I am still waiting for over $100 in refunds which I am not sure I will see.. China cheaters…

  10. One of my packages has been sitting in Los Angelas since the 26th and we are only 125 miles from there. It just says it is in transit but never updates and never gets here. It’s a gift for my daughter-in-law and her birthday was July the 1st. Where is it and when will it get here. I also have one that was supposed to get here on the 24th and it has never come. Please tell me what to do and how I can talk to someone in person. Dorthey Jellison 760-288-0175

  11. Have had nothing but problems with this site. Recently tried to check my orders to get order number for a oil difuser I ordered over a month and a half ago was notified my account was cancelled {not by me} I therefore could not get order number or file a complaint. NICE WAY TO DO BUSSINESS !!!! Ordering over 18 itams. most being junk.not as discribed One itan discribed as a laser level turned out to be watchmaker glasses I give up. SAVE YOUR MONEY GO TO YOUR LOCAL DOLLAR STORE GET SAME THING AND NO SHIPPING !!!!

  12. Bid on and won sunglasses. In the box with the glasses was a note from the seller stating these were the wrong glasses and I should request a refund and I could keep the sun glasses. If there was a problem they could contact the seller! Well, after a number of emails, sending a picture of the item as they requested, heard from them again stating they would send a return postage to send the item back. Had three more requests and finally I just sent the glasses back with the note fron the seller! Informed after this fiasco I would no longer be purchasing anything from them! Now it’s a waiting game for my credit to appear. Would not recommend purchasing from Tophatter!

  13. Every picture that I soar a present of the item as it was pristine I’ve ordered jewelry it’s junk jewelry junk you buy it in a candy store that delivers prompt however their merchandise is disgusting polyester shirts a coach handbag that was so dirty I threw in the garbage at $45 .I was trying to do some Christmas shopping but as I receive the merchandise it is so in adequate and so disgusting polyester shirts polyester handbags that are not what they say their Michael Kors I paid $50 for it it’s not a Michael Coors it’s a knock off this site should be shut down immediately I spent over 300 trying to place bets on everything for Christmas it is sheer sheer sheer garbage I got one coach handbag that look like somebody drug through the mud stained a disgusting disgusting the perfumes and we didn’t ounces but the way they pretrade it’s like you’re getting a full-size that might be my fault but I most certainly wouldn’t spend $20 on a little sampler it’s a Chinese bullshit site I am so upset and when you cancel they scrutinize you you can’t fit anymore because some of the beds I didn’t bet on they have a way of making it when you are bidding on something it gets out that day cause right to the next bed and you won that bid stay away from the site save your money this is bullshit and I hope that I can get some leucoplast to retrieve all my money so thank you very much top hatter

  14. I’ve spent a lot of money on the site or the merchandise I received is pure junk jewelry is garbage it’s a three dollar pieces of garbage I paid $45 for a coach him back filthy dirty filthy dirty

  15. As a buyer on Top Hatters, I received bogus counterfeit currency from a Seller who does high volume sales of these coins. I returned it for a refund and notified TH of this illegal act. They seem to not care, and last I checked he was still selling these items. BUYER BEWARE..

I tried selling on TH and they encourage you to ‘advertise’… you pay whether it sells or not. Eventually most sell, but after the listing fees, selling fees, advertising fees, I was left with pennies on the dollar.

I have been involved with auction for many years and eBay remains the largest, most reliable, auction site online.

  16. And absolute joke!
Shipping label printed within 5 hours of my winning bid (that is also likely a joke) and stillover a week later.

Customer service emails about the problem are typical boilerplate non-sense.
Wait 60 days for delivery??? really??

  17. I am very disappointed with TH, they have taken everything away from their sellers. I can no longer talk with my buyers, I can no longer know what my bidders think of my products, I can no longer pick out what items I want to put up for auction. To me customer service is everything in my business, I want to converse with my customer, I want to get to know them and them know me. A customer was upset about a shipping charge and I explained that on the product she bought how much I paid for TH fees, cost of product, shipping cost, shipping cost to me and by the time I was finished she thanked me and said she understood now why the shipping cost was so high and she was fine with it. Another woman bought a pair of earrings that she raved about a few weeks later she wrote back and said she had been robbed and the robbers took her expensive jewelry plus her brand new earrings that she bought from me, I sent her a new pair at no charge. These type of verbal exchanges made me closer to my buyer and I treasured that, now I can’t even say “your item is on the way, have a great day”.
Tophatter had already had enormous fees in place, now they have added more fee’s for those who actually want a chance to sell daily, you must bid on how much more you will pay than your competitor to list your items for advertising, at least $3.00 worth of advertising must be bought for this perk. The greed is unbelievable at TopHatter. Now they put me on something called $1.00 pay sale–don’t even know what that is but I was put on it for a month trial.
I used to request for auction what I wanted to go up and hope there was a place for the product, I used to get an average of 2-4 things an hour up for auction, now I am lucky if 1 thing that tophatter picks goes up a day for me now.
Looking for alternative selling places but not finding anything out there.

  18. I just found the site an examined some auctions. I saw a so-called 1 troy ounce of gold sell for $5, which is impossible as spot is over $1100, so I figured I better research it. Thanks to all of you who have given your warnings, I will write TH off entirely.

  19. Hi Please do read all comments if bidding or ordering from them, One it is cheaper to just keep the item if you don’t like it or if it dose not fit etc. . Two and this is very important to know and remember… it is pretty much all cheap crap from china, on this I can attest to I ordered quite a few items on their site and found this to be true in 80% of what I received. on gems you need to make sure on size and realness of item, on other jewels that they are really what was described and that the size and color are both what you want. On handbags, makeup, clothes, etc. please make sure that you try and verify the retailer as munch as possible as there are a lot of sites and chatter about tophatter or rather their venders selling fake stuff. just please read and verify before you buy, cause they hope you get caught up in the bidding frenzy and in all the hype rather than doing your research like we always do before we buy things. PLEASE READ THE BLOGS, BBB, CHATTER, Bing and Yahoo REWIEWS etc. before buying and also know this CO has went bankrupt 3 times before. if this tells you anything about their no extant return policy OH and LASTLY and EQUAILY IMPORANT THEY WAY OVERCHARGE ON THEIR POSTAGE. Sorry for the long review and I hope this helps.

  20. Tophatter: The worst platform for sellers!

    My experience:
Tophatter is a website that runs quick auctions. Auctions usually run for 90 seconds and buyers are able to bid on a very fast paste auction. There are many sellers in this website and you can find nice products or crappy products as well.
I was a seller on Tophatter for about 6 months and for sellers the panorama is quiet challenging and risky.

Tophatter charges high fees for every item you sell. For regular sellers the fees are 10% of the total price of the item, this including the charge for shipping, + $0.50 for scheduling fee + 2.9 % + $0.30
+ the charge for shipping that can be from $2.45 to $6.25 for small items or between $8.00 and up for bigger/heavier items.
This seems not to be a lot of money but let’s break down these amounts and you’ll see what I am talking about:

Let’s say one of your rings sold for $5.00 + $4.00 for shipping.
That makes a total of $9.00 – right?
Now, let’s break down that total:
    10% of $9.00 = $0.90 – Comission fee
    + 2.9% + $0.30 = $0.57 – Processing fee
    + $0.50 – Scheduling fee
+ $2.45 – Shipping fee (because is a small item)
Total of fees – $4.42 That will give you a marging of $4.58

Ok – That is not including the $ you invested in the piece, the envelope, paper, tape, ink, bubble wrap and the trip to the USPS store.
Now let’s add those amounts and see how much we end with:
Let’s say you invest $3.00 on the ring plus $1.99 shipping:
$4.99 for the ring including shipping
    + $0.59 – bubble envelop
    + $0.10 – ink for the label
    + $0.10 – tape
    + $ 0.03 – paper
    + $0.05 – bubble wrap
    + $1.00 – trip to the USPS
Total – $6.86 Which gives us a negative of -$2.28

Tophatter wants all sellers to start the auctions at $1.00 with a low shipping fee. How can sellers do business by selling items at such low starting auction price? The answer is simple: THEY DON’T GIVE A DAMN! They don’t give a Damn about your business, they don’t give a fdamn about your struggles and they don’t give a damn about anything else but their own!

The only way to survive on Top hatter is to put up your items and PRAY they sell for at least 3 times what you invested to at least break even! So, if your total investment is $6.86 you need that piece to be sold at least for $21.00 and that rarely happened.

I was just a regular seller, for what I understand Partner sellers have it even worse with commission fees of 30% and scheduling fees of $2.00 per piece.
Scheduling fees are charged weather the piece sells or not. So, Tophatter never EVER loses.

Other Challenges sellers face every day are:
    A. Not getting items scheduled for auctions at all.
    B. Item is sold but never paid for.
    C. Buyers cancel the transaction right after winning the auction.
    D. Buyers are not forced to pay after winning auctions.
    E. Buyers asking for refunds after items have been shipped.
    F. Tophatter issuing refunds without letting sellers know.
    G. Tophatter allowing buyers to ask for refunds after 30 days and refunding , no questions asks.
    H. Sellers not getting items back after buyers been refunded without consent.
    I. Sellers are not able to contact buyers for ANY reason. Tophatter had blocked that feature and now sellers cannot answer questions or resolve issues directly with sellers.
    J. Sellers are forced to ship items even if this means seller is losing money.
    K. Tophatter doesn’t have a phone number for sellers or buyers to call to resolve any issues.
    L. Inaccurate pay outs.
    M. Repetitive fees that sellers already paid before.
    N. Unresponsive Contact us emails.
    O. Tophatter allows misleading information and false advertisement from foreign sellers.
    P. Inflated MSRP’S on fake items. Some sellers selling fake jewelry as genuine semi precious and precious stones.
    Q. Tophatter ALWAYS takes the buyer’s side without giving sellers the opportunity to explain issues on transactions.
    R. Sellers receiving negative reviews for minor issues.
    S. Seller protection is just words and not real action.
    T. Sellers getting blocked or kicked out from the platform if they complaint because according to Tophatter those sellers are BASHING the company.
    U. Many complaints from buyers who felt scammed by receiving merchandise way different than described or merchandise that is fake.
    V. Good buyers going away from the platform due to miscommunication with sellers or the staff of the company.
    W. And so on….

*** After 6 months of going through all this BS, I got blocked for complaining over a refund Tophatter made to a buyer without consent after a month of the item been sold and shipped. Tophatter blocked me because I was asking about if I would be able to get the item back or how the seller protection will work in this case.****

Well it seems negative right now but I am sure I will find other ways to sell my items. Maybe this is a positive thing after all!

  21. I purchased 3 items this weekend totaling 33$. I do so to test my experience. I looked through the site for hours – I came across lots of Coach bags, Versace weekenders, Caviar diamond dust face creams that “retail” for 700-1200$ but listed for 60$ on THE. Buyers have to use discretion and common sense. These kinds of items should throw up red flags Big time. If it sounds too good to be true, rest assured it will be. Buyers want the best deal, sellers want the highest profit and TH provides the get together site for the two to do business so they want a cut of the deal. And TH sure gets it. Their fee schedule is way more aggressive than other sites. It looks as if the handwriting is in the wall for TH…doomed. just as their 2 previous Business ventures experienced.

Buyer beware. Seller be vigilant in your search for a good arena and TH Shame on you – the 3rd time is supposed to be the charm.

  22. I have purchased several items from this company and when I tried returning the fake, broken or items not even worth mentioning, I was unable to get my money returned, even after I returned the items. I even got Pay Pal involved but to no avail, nothing happened. DO NOT TRUST THE TOP HATTER COMPANY, IT IS A FRAUD, CHEAP AND NOT CUSTOMER FRIENDLY. I purchased a Robo Vaccum, a purse, ear rings and bracelet, cheap and not worth the price I paid for it.

  23. well!!! after spending thirty min. yesterday and upwards of an hour today just trying to contact their resolution center (lots of oops ans.) I have determined they will not take care of complaints but give you the royal run around. thank goodness I only tossed a measly 7.00 to these scam artists. Never more!!!

  24. I have purchased many items and have received some products already in a timely manner. All product so far is as expected by the description. I did not pay much at all and so far am happy with product. I didn’t expect real stones or real sterling or gold for the 2$ bids o paid. All in all so far so good.

  25. PLEASE do not use this site!!! You can buy these EXACT same items on for a dollar or two and get FREE shipping from China. I’ve paid $12-$14 on jewelry that they have on Aliexpress for $1.90!!! It takes a little longer to get the items but you save A LOT of $$$. As for the fragrances, go to and you will find the fragrances cheaper there also and those come in the mail in a week or so. You can order small samples for cheap to see if you like it before you purchase a large bottle. DO NOT USE TOPHATTER!!!!!!

  26. You mean I really have to give one star can I not give any stars at all they do not even deserve one star they are so bad .They not only rip off buyers but also the sellers. They suckers sellers into wanting to sell more . I was specious of what was going on the whole time it took me a month to figure it out that Tophatter is a company ran by scammers. I am too honest and felt bad for selling 1 item I bought for 1 or two dollars then the bidders would pay 18 for it. What was going on? I would send extra items to the winner cause I felt bad for how it all worked. But not only were the buyers being scammed by buying cheap items at inflated prices but the sellers are getting scammed by the people running it. I got banned because I would talk to the customers and sell my products to them directly at a fair price and fair shipping rate.Tophatter staff read my conversations They did not like this at all so they banned me for life.Thank you Tophatter for this. They would trick the sellers into being hooked on the sale. My first sale was to a guy named GENE well I signed up a second time just to see what would happen You guessed it again my first sale was to GENE go figure..I Canceled the 2nd account right away. I know they have their own staff bid on sellers items so they would not get scheduled into another auction so that the only other options the seller would have to sell a item was what they called partner auctions where after only one partner auction I seen they take over half of what you make in sales and then some but want to give sellers 1099’s for the total gross sale meaning if I sold 500 dollars worth of items I only made 200 they kept 300 they would 1099 sellers for the full 500.This has got to be tax fraud case or something. The IRS need to check into this site and go thru their sales records. I found flaw after flaw in the short time I was a seller and they seen I knew what was going on. You can make up new user names and bid on items unlimited amount of times and any email address will work even if its not real like 123t@nothing .com. Unlike other selling sites you have to confirm your email address. Not this one.The staff is very unprofessional and very young. One seller told me 12 year old kids in a garage could do a better job at running a site like topphatter. I now believe him. If the sellers would band together they could have a class action lawsuit against this Tophatter site for unfair dealings. BUYERS SELLERS ALL STAY AWAY from this site.
Also I just noticed ….look up top here on this site above my review LOL
This business is not yet responding to reviews.
O Yea I would not claim it or respond either if I owned the site . Goes to show how crooked they are, If anybody gives good reviews of this site it because you never shopped Walmart or A dollar store and dont realize that if you did you would find the same items alot cheaper.

  27. I was a buyer and had not been with them long when I started to bid. I seemed to be outbid mostly but then I wonan item that I made a mistake on and had to go thru hell with them to get them to cancel. Then one other time an item was not clear about how many of those items were included so when I won and it was not a good deal because there were very few and was a rip off. So when I asked for them to take it off my account they booted me out and have never let me bid again.

  28. My experience with Tophatter was completely negative. Their main seller, Elite Jewellery Studio blocked me from bidding after I had asked for refunds on a couple of items, and even blocked my emails. All I wanted was Certificates Of Authenticity sent with my purchases. They dominate the 10 _ 14 kt good jewellery site and the Gold and Silver site. All the jewelry on these sites are sold by them. So, once they block you, you are pretty much blocked from buying anything.
When I received the first couple of pieces of jewellery I had purchased I was totally disappointed. The pictures on the site are really blown up, so the gems and stones look a lot bigger than the really are. In reality they are just tiny chips so small you can hardly see them.
I’m from Canada, and the site looks totally different than the one pictures above. It is just pictures of the jewelry being sold. As far as I’m concerned it is”buyer beware”. The site is a rip off.

  29. Cheap stainless steel jewelry and drugstore cosmetics. If you accidentally hit green button you are bidding, watch out! If you are in the market for this kind of product go to the 99 cent store and get a real deal

  30. I’ve ordered about 20 items. Once I got something I didn’t order and I’m still trying to get a refund. To add insult to injury, I had to pay to return the item I didn’t order and never got what I did. I’ve ordered several pieces of jewelry trusting the suggested retail price. Earrings, while gold, were lighter than plastic. A necklace that said the pendant was 1 1/2 inches was only 3/8 of an inch. Some face cream was open and about 1/3 missing (all over the outside of the container) When I contacted the seller, he promised to include a “gift” with my next order. It is next to impossible to settle any problems, Tophatter itself took 10 days to even look at my complaint and it was obvious they hadn’t read it. I’ve ordered my last item and hope they get shut down. At least three items never arrived although the seller says they were sent. Several items cost me more than I had bid.

  31. Hi Everyone. I am a seller on top Hatter and you have no idea what crooks they are. When I first started selling authentic Michael Kors items I was promised not to be put against other designer auctions. I am a 100% legit seller with authentic items. When I first started I loved selling on tophatter. Now they’ve raised our commissions put us up against other designer auctions hold our money and treat us like garbage. It used to be a wonderful place to sell and buy. The staff is horrible and treats us with no respect whatsoever. I think that they forget that without there honest sellers there would be no buyers. I for one would would warn any sellers to avoid this site like the plague. They play favorites and those sellers get the best timeslots and are never put up against other auctions. We get reprimanded for every little thing. It’s a hostile place for honest sellers. To avoid this site like the plague. They play favorites and those sellers get the best timeslots and are never put up against other auctions. We get reprimanded for every little thing and I am so sorry to hear of anyone that didn’t receive their items or received a fake. Most of my buyers don’t want to deal with Tophatter and buy from me directly because of the treatment received. Their staff needs to be fired and replaced with people that actually have hearts. Right now they hired a company to post all over the Internet about how great Tophatter is because their sellers are speaking out and leaving them left and right. We are all going to a new site called ODZBODZ to sell. The great thing is the people that found it it were banned from Tophatter because they spoke their mind about all of the scamming going on. The sellers are excited about this new site and have left Tophatter to go where they are respected and to sell. The great thing is the people that found it it were banned from Tophatter because they spoke their mind about all of the scamming going on. The sellers are excited about the new site and can’t wait to be treated like human beings!! Again sorry for all of you out there that got scammed but TH will soon be a thing of the past!!

  32. As a seller on Tophatter for a little over two years I just want to tell you all that it’s only gotten worse. I’ve seen a lot of reviews talking about the listing fees & commissions. Well, you’re going to love this. As of last week they have started a new scheduling road block called “variable commission”. As a way to insure (supposedly) better chances of scheduling you can raise the amount of their commission anywhere from 10 – 50%. Like a lot of long time sellers I’m refusing to do this and as a result haven’t been scheduled in an auction for almost 3 days. Some sellers willing to up the percentage are still having a hard time getting scheduled. Looks like auction space goes to the highest bidder.

  33. Many if not all of the negative comments here about Tophatter are from former sellers who need to move on….You failed, we get it geezus….I would have loved to play 2nd base for the Yankees, but I know what I am good at and what I fall short at. Doesn’t mean that the Yankees are a crooked organization; just as your failures do not mean Tophatter is a bad company.

  34. I purchased a lot from this site. Received everything just fine. My daughter liked a ring on their site, so I stayed up late every night bidding on this ring. Finally I won. I was so excited, I decided to save it for christmas. I wish I could post a picture of the ring I bid on and the ring I got. The misrepresentation of their products are unbelievably insane. Luckily, I got re funded. But all those ladies that got the same ring.. I wonder if they we just as upset as I was. After I got refunded I received an email stating I was going to be suspended from bidding. Really??? Who cares!!! No one want the aggravation! And I think I’m going to join the Facebook groups that was noted in the review. Let’s get it out there…buyer beware!!

  35. I am new to Tophatter however I have 12 years experience selling online. I find Tophatter a nice change from the big guys and in the auction format most every item sells….the fees are a little high but I feel well worth the benefits the site offers.

    • Rocco, research Tophatter. As an online seller of 12 years you’ll see the horrific reviews from buyers and sellers alike. As a new seller on Tophatter if you NEED to touch the stove to make sure it’s hot then by all means, touch away. Just know you were warned by many, many people. Your research may also want to include Tophatter’s 2 previously failed companies, Blippy and Heartsy. They continue to make the same mistakes. What about when we were able to log into each others accounts by accident and even change passwords last summer? Or last WEEK when Braintree was able to go into our bank accounts and make withdraws from their own mistakes?

Yeah touch that stove Rocco, see how much you’ll kick yourself for doing it later.

    • Well, good luck Rocco. Let me know how you feel after month after month of increasing fees and Tophatter putting themselves between the buyer and seller at every turn. I’ve been in retail (stores & then online) for 20 years and I’ve never seen a venue or vendor treat sellers like they do… and I’ve dealt with some real doozies.

Do you know they now don’t release funds for some sellers until the item is marked delivered by the shipping company? Add that to the 2-3 days it takes to process the payment and it’s a week or more after you ship before you actually get your money. That’s just the latest, too, and it took several inquiries for their community rep to even acknowledge it was happening.

Their shipping system is a joke (and pads their commission at the buyer’s expense while not even verifying addresses… and if gets returned because of a bad address, it’s your fault), feedback is arbitrary and one nutcase buyer can derail your sales for days even if their feedback does get removed, which might or might not happen and you’ll never know which. There’s constant changes don’t get announced… even staff doesn’t know what’s happening sometimes. And customer support disappears the moment you question their policies.

If it works for you, enjoy. It used to be a great place to sell but greedy, arrogant owners who constantly mislead their sellers have made it a bargain bin for buyers with fees that eat what meager profit remains. You won’t see me there anymore after the holidays – between the constant changes that always erode my margin and the combination of ignorance and arrogance from the staff, it’s lost all appeal for me. But if you can make it work, more power to you!

  36. This site used to be fun and you could make a small profit . Now they have raised their fees once again to sellers. They do not stand up for the sellers just the buyers. I have given away so much jewelry in the fear of negative feedback in which TH stops you from auctioning.
The buyers know that they can hold feedback over your head as Th does not support the seller. They now take control of your shiping fees and they now make a profit on those.
I would very much like to say Sellers Beware and do not support Th Site. They want to charge a $2 listing fee on an auction and you have to start your item at $1 and free shipping ???? I also hope that buyers will see that this site is so wrong. A lot of people are really trying to supplement incomes in these hard times and Th is really taking advantage of this.

  37. Tophatter, Inc.

    Letter to customer Service:

Check out how TopHatter has responded to me.

Dear TopHatter Admin, I take the time to write in detail and fully explain my issues to you, and you give me a half-ass response ‘Thank you for your comments, one of our representatives will contact you shortly blah blah blah…” but two days later you send me this form email asking me to fill out a feedback survey? Is that your idea of a customer representative contacting me? Would you like fries with that? C’mon.

Two issues: allowing buyers to arbitrarily cancel orders is highly unorthodox in the auction world. Your two-strike policy is not worth a hill of beans, when the buyer can just open a new account under a new name. I suspect you have implemented this policy to facilitate your internal shill bidding and as I have noticed you have an unusually high amount of buyers present at your auctions that have hundreds of bids in their 2 year history but no purchases. Boy, those guys must be really unlucky! Further, if you’re going to allow such as asinine policy to exist, for what ever reason, then at least allow the seller to offer the item to the runner up. Most of all, don’t make the seller wait three more days to get relisted, they should be re-prioritized in the que. And finally, don’t relist their auction at friggin’ 3AM when no one is on line, and still charge them the auction fee anyway when their item doesn’t sell. That is nonsense.

The same item that I sold for 30 dollars in my first auction, was FINALLY relisted a week later, after 15 reschedule requests, but at 3AM EST(6AM CT), and didn’t sell of course because no one was there. I have been unable to list since then, each time I try to schedule you guys give me some bullshit that it was unable to be rescheduled because there was no room in the auction, and I should try a later time… but yet no later time is available for booking because you only put current day and next day auctions on your scheduling board. The next time I try to reschedule and the very same items is rejected for completely different reason. I noticed that once my free trial credits ran out.. some how I can’t get scheduled anymore.

I paid my 1 dollar for the last auction but you aint gettin’ the next one because you went and booked me at 3AM again and of course my item didn’t sell again. Please close my account.

  38. I came to TopHatter expecting to find deals. Well, I was wrong. It’s like some people do not look around to different auction sites before they come to tophatter. I have found items highly over priced and seen the same exact item on ebay for like three times less of that price. I brought a bracelet on TH and exactly went to ebay and say the same exact one for like 2 bucks T.T
I guess they do have some good stuff, but this site is a no no for me.
I’m going to stick to my good old ebay. I don’t care if it’s not eye appealing. At least I know I’m getting a good deal. At least I know if the product is does not fit the description I can just use their buyer protection. Never had a problem with ebay. But the seller fees are kinda of hey or ebay and they are for TH.

  39. Now I ‘m afraid ! I came across TH while looking for a particular Michael Kors bag. I have bought some MK and Coach bags off of TH on the past couple of days. When they come (now I see I need to be worried if I will get them all ) How will I know if they are fake???

    • You have to research and be careful what you buy. I bid on items only and do not order from independent sellers or China. I am pleased with my purchases and I’ve bought many.

  40. I have had so many bad experiences at Tophatter and what’s worse is the fact that if we were treated like this in a brick and mortar store, they would be shut down. I stopped selling there and now sell at Raise Your Paddlez actually cares about us as sellers and there fees are low. They are new but they actually talk to you and take your ideas and suggestions to heart. I would rather bring my buyers here and help them grow than to give Tophatter one more cent.

    • Same for me I switched and am willing to help grow before I will allow them to continue to clean out my bank account with ridiculous and ludicrous fees

  41. So I just downloaded the app. Are the coach purses fake then?

    • I just ordered a tote and it better be real. I was charged 35 dollars for shipping to Canada I ordered it Thursday night, I remember because a few hours before the auction I had Emailed the seller asking her if she could sell me that bag ..The mail went unanswered.I was so happy when I won the bag,I jumped up and grabbed the phone to call a taxi so I could put the money in the bank and i realized it was starting to get dark so I looked at the time,my hart sank, the bank had just closed it was 8’o clock. I had spent more then two hours trying to get this bag I just ran out of time. That’s ok right the rules say a buyer has 24hrs. to pay for their item. It wasn’t that easy.I started getting swarmed with Email .Lucky for me the seller was very under standing and told me there would be no problem with paying for it in the morning. Then I went back and deleated two Emails from TH and one from. pay pal.I don’t think they are fake, but I do worry that it’s a two part bag and maybe only one part will be new with tags and the smaller part will be gently used at least in the picture it looks like that could happen .I don’t see how they can keep making money if they were selling fakes.

  42. I spoke the truth and my chat was disabled!!!! These sellers are selling outlet product way over retatail,….would never buy from this site.

    • Same exact thing happened to me! Told people through chat they could find item on tophatter shown listed @ msrp 399$ for like $40 online and they disabled my chat!!! Shady!!!

  43. I have been looking online to find a way to get information on this website I am a buyer I paid $210 on a coach bag I made sure to read the hole bio on the item and when I get the bag it was a fake and a bad fake at that when I tried to inform top hatter of what happened I got no response thank God I paid though paypal and got a full refund but I’m not going to let them get away with it I’m going to stop it now.

    • When was that and what item. I can say they do regulate their coach sellers! Receipts have to be supplied ! Although I would give the advise to,avoid the site

  44. Do you notice a common theme among the posters of negative reviews? They’re all former sellers who have been suspended by Tophatter! Do you see any reviews from current sellers? No, well not until this one because I happen to sell on Tophatter and have for over a year now in high volume no less. I’ve been through the fee changes, etc. & I just do not agree with all of the negative opinions on here. Tophatter has allowed my business to grow in ways I never imagined could be possible. It does require a lot of hard work because they are very strict with the standards in which they hold their sellers to, but that is reflected in the quality of the items and repeat buyers you see now. The current Tophatter is far from the Tophatter of the past. They’ve made aggressive moves to rid the site of replicas and sellers who gouge their buyers on shipping charges. I’m proud to be a part of it and hope to continue growing along with it.

    • this was obviously written by a TH staff member lol in an attempt to make the company look better

      • I agree not one seller on Tophatter is happy with them. They are losing any and all reputable ones they had do to inflated fees charged to sellers and tampering with the postal and delivery service of items.

      • TOPHATTER SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Absolutely!! I thought that as I read it!!

    • Layla maybe a while back things were good however, not anymore and you know it!

Stay clear you will lose, your bank account to them!

I’ve been both buyer and seller! I can say the coach bags are authentic because they are screened. Jewelry however can be an issue if you buy plated make sure you r aware that plated jewelry will not hold up to everyday wear and tear. As a seller of jewelry I purchase jewelry made only in the USA and tend to sell only stainless steel because it will never change colors turn your finger green and is hypoallergenic! Don’t let this one bad site ruin your experience! I also sell coach and they are authentic! And am always happy to show proof of sale! MY ADVICE IS TO TRY THIS BRAND NEW AUCTION SITE THATS IN ITS BABY PHASE, THEY TREAT BOTH BUYERS AND SELLERS WITH RESPECT AND DO NOT CHARGE THE SELLERS OBNOXIOUS FEES WHICH IN TURN CAUSES SELLERS TO PURCHASE CHEAPER QUALITY JEWELRY TO MAKE A PROFIT! I do not work for this new site but would like to see both sellers and buyers work together to meet the supply and demand of quality items. 🙂

    • Dear Layla,
Good for you! I have gotten great deals on designer bags and jewelry since I began buying from Tophatter a couple months ago. No issues so far. No fakes, fun auctions and perfect quality new and used items.
      Thank you!!

  45. Tophatter in the beginning was a very good site, the things that did well were supplies as well as handmade. Then the re-sellers came in turning it into a pseudo-Ebay. Soon the glitz and glamour of buying handmade was gone and in place it was instead fashion jewelry which was selling at phenomenal prices; something that could be bought from aliexpress or even right from a seller on ebay for $1.00 would go for upwards of 50 dollars; I’ve even seen plated rings go as high as $300 with the seller paying no more then $10.00 for the piece. Because of this shift the people who were interested in supplies and handmade items disappeared and instead Tophatter started to appeal to a different crowd; gullible middle aged+ ladies with a need for instant gratification and low attention spans, Tophatter has even admitted this in interviews. As such, these people were not reading descriptions, and getting disappointment feeling they paid too much. Because of this, Tophatter has the worst buyer retention problem, and the poor seller who started their item at $1.00, which is often forced would be left a negative feedback that would forever influence their scheduling ability. Tophatter has this awful revolving door system that makes it so anyone who is successful on their site will eventually not be able to list; but you have to have items that perform well or you will not be able to list, so as a seller you have to pray your items sell high but not too high or else you are punished because sellers do not matter, there will always be sellers tophatter needs buyers as Chris had even openly said sellers are easily replaced.

  46. Please do not use tophatter there is nothing but fake product ! Spent so much money on coach bg and they were all fake please don’t be fooled everything is fake !

    • I have been reading the reviews on TH and have to disagree with sellers being lumped together as scammers, I sell high quality products on TH and take really good care of my customers. Before selling, I bought several things from TH and had no problems with the quality. Please do not lump all merchandise and sellers into one negative group.

  47. If you go to DHGate or MiniInTheBox you will find most of their jewlery for pennies a piece it’s a total scam

  48. After 6 bad transactions of either not receiving my items after paying or receiving them a full 3 weeks after the shipping quote time I decided to leave. A lot of these issues had to do with TH’s inaction in dealing with many of these sellers by allowing them to continue to sell. Tophatters habit of turning that blind eye had set a trend that has caused a lot of bad sellers to grow in numbers on TH resulting in good buyers leaving due to not feeling safe. And what has replaced those good buyers? Bad ones which are defrauding the good sellers now by making false claims of broken items or being mislead.

The lack of security in shopping at TH has seemed to cause them to change their rules and regulations on a whim which has caused confusion and general unhappiness and also makes it easier for those bad buyers to scam sellers . Maybe this lack of security is in part due to the fact Tophatter has always hidden negative feedback given to sellers from the buyers and one has to ask why? If a seller is honest what should they have to hide? And now, TH has decided to hide this negative feedback from sellers as well which greatly limits the seller/ buyer relationships and does not allow the seller to fully understand and correct an unhappy sale… they can only do what tophatter feels is best for them to do and given tophatters habit of turning that blind eye… do we as buyers really want to rely on their views?

I, for one, will stick to safer websites to do my spending.

  49. There have been both positives and negatives about this site, but I can say that I have met many very talented sellers there who make quality handmade goods. I would not have had the opportunity to meet these sellers otherwise, so I am happy for that. Pretty much all of the items i have purchased have been of good quality. I have mostly stuck to the handmade items and sellers that I am familiar with because when I don’t, I generally end up being dissatisfied in some way. All of the handmade items I have purchased from there have been excellent. Tophatter certainly has a lot of sellers who make all of their own goods, and those sellers also make it a point to give excellent customer service. If anyone would like to try out the Tophatter app you can use the referral code 11c693 to get a $5 credit. Check it out for yourself, and definitely look for any handmade auctions!

    • I have received several items in a timely fashion on TH. Buyers have to take responsibility for what they buy. Before I buy an item, I research it price wise and quality wise so I know what to expect. I tend to buy items that are NOT from China, are from reputable sellers and won’t bid over a certain amount for an item. I have no complaints.

  50. I spent 366.00 on items that was probably worth 25.00 maby ! I sent them all back and they refunded me 62.00 does that sound fair ? Not to me ! I am vary Disappinted I would have thought they had better feelings for the average person . I thought they would do a better job of taking care of their customers ! I feel they take advantage of people who has never seen their type of items that they would send you for the amount of the money they take from you on the vary day of the sale ! Becarefull when you go to Tophatter’s site !!!!!!!!!

    • I dont mean this to sound crass, but why would you spend $366 on items you think we’re only worth $25. You should of went into the info on the product look at the MSRP and look at the buy now price. Granted the seller may exaggerate the MSRP. I try looking up the product on line and see the going price before I set up a reminder, and if enough time I also try to go the website of product the seller is selling. I don’t mean the sellers website.

  51. I got banned from tophatter because I was tagged in a post ON FACEBOOK… myself and several others were, and I have proof of this as well. So guess what? they monitor people’s social media too. Scary, isn’t it? I filed complaints with the BBB, only to have the BBB decide they’d “done their best to resolve…” My guess is the BBB decided it was resolved after their palms got greased, but who knows. :/ You can see the whole exchange between me and TH on the BBB site.

  52. Don’t give this site your time or money. This is a good place for buyers but not great. you don’t know what your getting or the quality. Lots of items come from china and you never know if what you are getting is the real deal or not.

Sellers… you’re going to pay most if not all of your profits to tophatter. Don’t bother it’s a rat race and once you’re no longer new… they don’t want you around anymore.

  53. I decided to check out TopHatter again since it first opened and the vast change in products being sold had me suspicious. I was browsing the lingerie section they had and something just didn’t seem right. A seller by the name of Alyssa, from Arizona was selling stuff being shipped from China. Head on over to eBay, type in product description and boom, found eBay sellers from China/Hong Kong coincidentally selling the exact same product. Alyssa even copied the pictures that were featured on the seller’s page.

Technically she’s not stealing the product. She’s basically taking orders then buying them from the seller on eBay and making just about a 50%+ profit. She’s also charging shipping when the eBay seller isn’t charging for shipping so that’s extra cash in her pocket.

I liked TopHatter when it first started and people sold handmade stuff. Now scummy people are allowed to sell other people’s merchandise without their knowledge. Like I said, while it’s not technically stealing since she did purchase it from the original buyer it’s still pretty shady.

  54. Tophatter is a joke of a company. I am a buyer and got scammed multiple times buying fake products. It seems like a lot of the same resellers have a lot of control on this site too. Sellers can sell you products that they don’t have in their procession and then say they “lost” it. Shipping charges are not regulated. A seller can charge 20 bucks to ship a ring that’s costs them only a stamp to send. Sellers have a 10 day (business days) grace period to ship a “real” product out so if you bought something it could take 15+ days until you get it, more if there are holidays. If you say anything a seller does not like in a chat room they will mute you immediately because they fear you will expose the truth about this site. Tophatter obviously does not regulate this site and could care less if fake items are being sold. The idea of tophatter is genius, yet it is apparent they do not care about sellers or buyers and are only in business to scam and make a quick buck. Stay far far away from Tophatter. You will waste lots of money and time.

  55. This site treats its sellers like trash.

  56. Tophatter is a complete scam. All of the items that are sold there can be bought on ebay for 1/4 of the price.

The treat their selles like crap.

The site is set up for buyers, not sellers

Steer clear from this site as a buyer and a seller. it’s not worth the headache

  57. I was a member of TH without any issues for months. I paid in excess of $150 a week in selling fee’s and I have the receipts to prove it. Everything was fine until I noticed a member selling fake Mossy Oak items and labeling them as Mossy Oak. I am a licensed retailer of Mossy Oak and bound by contract to notify of any fraudulent activity that I happen to see. I contacted members at TH, several I can call by name if contacted. I was told by them “quote” the seller was doing nothing wrong and they continued to allow him to sell these items. Customers were actually making purchase of these items in thinking they were buying genuine articles and in fact they were fake. I notified TH that if they would not take action against this type selling I would be forced to contact Mossy Oak and file a complaint, in which I did! It only took TH 2 weeks after this happened to set me up with a fake buyer and have my account suspended. I have proof of this as well. The person who purchased from me was a “hostess” of their site and the account was set up to make this single purchase from me and file a complaint. The person harrassed me beyond what anyone would imagine and finally I blew up and told her what I thought in a very unpleasant form. For this I was suspended from TH. In other words, I got hot on their back side about the fake merchandise they were allowing to sell for major money with full knowledge it was fake. I do not recommend TH to anyone and I would never attempt to sell again nor purchase. Even if I could!! You can not trust what you are purchasing. You can not trust the staff of TH to help you. It is a site better left alone! If you need any printed proof of these accusations I have all documents to provide. Just make contact!

    • ** Run very, very far from this site.** I could not agree more!
Fake make-up……..Fake designer bags ….Fake designer Jewelry !
Drop-shipping from China ( aliexpress site.ect ) Not saying this is bad.but to willingly pass off the items as ” authentic ” is wrong.
Honest sellers telling & reporting the truth being *shut up *.and removed from the platform., and on the Forum. The highest fees on ANY auction site!
Intern seller / buyer resolutions that do not work! Eg : seller sends an item with tracking ( shows up delivered ) The seller has to refund the buyer, because the buyer says they have not received it ? The buyer keeps the item for free ? Tophatter offers ZERO seller protection. Tophatter was fun the first 5 months.then they stopped caring for the sellers. No Tophatter! But wait…Tophatter is starting to sell their own items. This will end up like a sort of “overstock ” auction or e-commerce.

    • tophatter screwed me over on sellers fees after i had two stupid people back out after paying because they didnt want my rings, it clearly stated the size yet they wanted a smaller size, i am out a few bux from paypal because their is a charge to refund, than they just kicked me off tophatter saying i used profanity with a buyer,,f**k them..i am going to file a class action lawsuit,,how can they charge 14% from our shipping fees? thats ridiculous, i am still waiting to be refunded my sellers fees from people that backed out of buying..AGAIN..F**K THE SCAMMING TOPHATTER..they need to go down

    • If and when something looks too good to be true, run, run like hell. I happened upon this site when I was on Facebook. Intrigued by the word “sold” next to prices averaging 99% off,I decided to research and read comments before I joined. Thank you, thank you, thank you for saving me money, and most importantly, my sanity. I am not capable of holding my tongue, so not only would I have been suspended, I would probably be arrested.

  58. Tophatter is one of the most messed up places I’ve ever been a seller on, hands down. The rules change daily and the double-speak by the staff is unending. If you really want to know what sellers think of Tophatter, go to This is their public forum for questions/concerns/ideas from buyers and sellers. It is page after page after page of problems.

The fees are unreal. So for example say you sell an item for $15 + $5 s/h ($20 total) in the jewelry auction. Your fee would be $2.75 + $2 = $4.75. Your fees will be 24%. And that is assuming the buyer PAYS. The number of buyers that don’t pay is staggering. Some people have reported as has as 35% non-paying winners.

Scheduling ability is based on a seller’s feedback score and buyers can leave inaccurate feedback and knock you out of your ability to schedule very, very quickly. Buyers can flat out lie, affect a seller’s ability to sell, and Tophatter refuses to remove inaccurate feedback. For example if a buyer says an item wasn’t received and the tracking shows it was delivered? Tophatter leaves the negative on the seller’s account.

Run very, very far from this site. Tophatter is the 3rd website experiment the founders have cooked up and their old businesses were a flop, Blippy and Heartsy being the #1 and #2. Tophatter will be no different. No customer retention. No seller support. Copy and paste answers from staff and blatant lies.

    • Everything this person has stated is fact. I have experienced each and every single thing in the past!! TH is out for one thing and that is the side that gives them the most profit. They could not care less for the right side and the person who is in the right. They will dance with the devil to make a dollar.

    • I LIVED IN rupee fr a year. when I came back I thught I would watch the tophatters auctins. I could npt find out their schedule which they used to psot and this afternoon I have not been able to find anythi ng I could watch and bid on. jhs everything changed?

  59. I was on TH for over a year. I, and a whole group of my friends were banned from the site when TH said that they wanted access to your PayPal account so that THEY could give refunds if your customer was unsatisfied even BEFORE you were able to work with the customer. If the customer went to TH and said that they got rooked, true or not, TH was going to take the $$ out of your PP account. TH wouldn’t even ask the seller, just “slurp” There goes your money.

Because I, and a whole group called Enchanted Arts, spoke up, we all got muted for being negative when we asked why we would HAVE to do this. Then we all got banned when we said that we weren’t going to.

After doing more research, I found that the owners of TH were also the owners of Heartsy and Blippy, whom both went belly up, leaving their sellers high and dry with no recourse to get any of their listing moneys back.

There is also a Tophaters Anonymous on Facebook for the folks who all got booted for asking questions and other folks that got fed up. I found this article through ThA.

Another problem what arose was Resellers. They’d buy the 99 cent junk from Alibaba and others and say it was handmade and charge 4X as much.

If you have anymore questions, just let me know.

    • I bid on and received a beautiful coach bag. The seller was great answered all my question. Sent bag right away. Another seller Bop Shop took my money didn’t send my bag I’ve complained to them and TH several times and no response Now I can’t contact the seller. I don’t have their email they took it off my invoice and I’m out 127.00. I trie to write live feed and they erased my comment on TH

      • I hope you filed a dispute with paypal to get your money back. If you have not, you should right away!

        • I had the same issue myself in that I paid for an item that I never received. I did file a dispute with PayPal and they made many unsuccessful attempts at contacting the seller. I think they did contact Tophatter and were told that the seller would be banned from selling on the site. The interesting and amazing thing about the whole thing was that PayPal refunded my money from their own pocket when they could not resolve the issue. If you haven’t done so already, file a dispute with PayPal.

    • I left tophatter at the same time you did. as soon as i found out about the paypal thing, i decided i didn’t want my paypal account “out there” for tophatter to play with as they pleased. i felt it was awful. the fees were slowly going up too. i logged on the other day, and i see things are very different looking now. i don’t think i’d be able to figure it all out now. i didn’t really try either!

    • At first I really liked TH. I was selling Genuine Designer Purses and Fine Jewelry. Then they got greedy. The fees started out at 10% with a .50cent listing fee (and you had to pay 10% on the shipping, insane). Then they steadily went up until I quite at a fees of 30% commission, including that 30% on the shipping, with a $2.00 per item listing fee. The Buyers did not want to pay very much, which I understand, however I found myself loosing tons of money.

30% commission is what you would expect a Consignment Store to charge and they do all the work. It is insane to pay that much and you have to do all the work.

I really liked the concept, but Greed Does Not Pay.
      Shame on You Tophatter!!

    • I am looking for GENUINE 18 carat gold rings, bracelets, earings & chains /necklaces- all genuine 18 carat for my own use.

What are my chances in finding genuine gold on this TH auctioning site?

      Thank you

  60. My experience at Tophatter has been a disaster. I bought “sterling silver” chains that turned out to be filled with lead. I bought a 14k stamped gold ring that turned out to be fake. After some investigating, I found out that Tophatter turns a blind eye to the sale of fraudulent, fake items, apparently because those items naturally sell well which lines their pockets. It is not the exception, but the rule that jewelry and high end brand names will be fake in a Tophatter auction., despite what the item description says.

    • It really is too bad that TH allows sellers to get away woth these things. I have heard a lot of similar complaints about products bought on TH, but I have never had an issues. However, I tend to stick to the Handmade auctions/sellers, and I have met a lot of wonderful people that I have come to trust. I always look for their items on TH because I know I will get unique, quality products that are made with care, and I always know that if I am dissatisfied in any way, these sellers will do whatever it takes to make it right. It is really sad that they allow sellers that don’t have this same sense of responsibility to their buyers to be honest and provide quality products. I think it all depends on what you are looking to purchase though. I honestly don’t think I would go on TH looking to buy a Coach bag or something like that because there is just no way of knowing what you will end up with. However, I will certainly continue to buy there as long as the honest, hard working sellers that I have come to love are selling there. TH should support those sellers, and get rid of the ones selling fraudulent items, but unfortunately it seems to be more about the bottom line than making their buyers and sellers happy and safe. I would recommend for any one looking to try this site to check out any handmade auctions because you truly can find some amazing one of a kind items that you will absolutely love. You can download the Tophatter app and use the referral code 11c693 to get $5 to use for free. Try it out, and see for yourself! 🙂

      • Or you could just not give your money to a business that knowingly cheats the consumer and get your hand-mades some where else. It’s a gamble every time you buy from a seller at Tophatter. A lot of them take your money and never send the item, even sellers in the hand-made auctions.

        • All sellers are independent contractors on TH just like eBay. I am a seller and buyer on TH and want to give my customers the best service possible. One thing I wish would change is that I am not able to contact my customers directly on TH. I have an address to send them their items won but no email. Unless they leave feedback I have no way of finding out if they like their items. I send from China mostly but live in US. So I am about to change that. From now on I will only sell items in stock at my location. Shipping will be faster to my customers.

At this time all my items list where they are coming from and there is no surprise. What I like about TH is as a seller if I sell top quality products that I list they sell fast. I have made money from day one on TH. The auction set up is better than eBay for sellers. I have been on eBay for years and have not done as well as I do on TH. So I say give it a try. If you can sell top quality items, start bid at $1 and ship within 1 day and have customer receive item within 7 days. You will do very well on TH.

I do not get paid right away. They hold the funds and only pay out twice a month. That is bad for a seller but good for buyers. If you don’t get items purchased send them a request for refund. Tophatter is good to their customers. My customers are important to me and as a seller I cannot control what other sellers do. I want my customers to be happy with the items I am selling. Please remember to leave feedback on items purchased. It is the only way sellers on TH know how they are doing. Happy Shopping.

      • It is a complete scam. I ordered a watch for 5.86 and they then charged me $98.00 for the watch. The watch does not run. I am turning them in to the Better Business Bureau.

    • Yes I got caught up in the buying of a fake coach purse now trying to get my money back haha

    • I TOTALLY AGREE!! TOPHATTER is all about deceiving the buyers. I too bought jewelry thinking it was real based on the information provided only to find out it was worthless. Tophatter could care a less if people are scammed out of their money. I had turned a number of friends to the site only to be embarrassed later. They shouldn’t be allowed to be an app. They should be taken to court for fraud!!!!

    • I Filed BBB Complaint, IFC complaint, FBI Cyber crimes complaint and still looking for other complaint avenues. In addition to selling counterfeit products they charge you to return them. It is up to you to police your account for refunds and request them once the return arrives. This site is just bad news all the way around. The seller has 60 days to ship your product. MSRP pricing is a joke. The clothing and jewelry are 95% cheap Chinese imports. To get a refund you have to ship product back to china at your own expense. Even if product is damaged. If you want to buy cheap Chinese go to ally express. You get better prices practically free shipping and their customer service always works well with the buyers.
Website auction house is in violation of providing a selling venue for counterfeit and copywrite infringement items. I know because I have purchased some. For sure it’s Kylie Cosmetics, NFL NBA AFL Harley Davidson and As Seen on TV. I have sent numerous emails asking them to stop but no luck. Sellers selling Counterfeit Kykie Cosmetics are On Sale and Deana Ortlay both out of Van Nuys California. Tophatter is out of Palo Alto I believe. The only recourse offered by seller is returning your counterfeit item at your own expense while knowingly continuing to allow these products to be sold on the website. I just can’t stand it when we bring in Chinese counterfeit products. It ruins the product reputation from a quality and price standard. Anyway submitted for what it’s worth.
