You may be asking what the top selling items on eBay are so that you can get in on the latest trend and make some money. Unfortunately, not many people are going to just tell you that sort of thing. If they already know what the hottest items are, they’re not going to intentionally create competition for themselves by sharing the insight. However, you can get the information and figure it out on your own if you know where to look.
There are two methods you can use. By analyzing the eBay Popular Items Page yourself, or by using research software like Hammertap or Terapeak. I’ll go over both approaches and show you what the current results are, or at least what they are on the day I’m writing this article. Then you should use what I show you to get your own current results.
Results from the Popular Items Page
The Popular Items page is a free provided by eBay itself. As you can see, the page is divided into two sections. The very top products on the left, and hot items organized by category on the right.
Today (10/12/14) The 10 most popular items are:
- Vintage Engagement Rings.
- Tanzinite Rings.
- Skeleton Keys.
- Perfume Bottles.
- Clothes by Ashley Stewart.
- Ernie Banks Baseball Cards.
- Braun Oral B Toothbrushes.
- Wedding Cake Toppers.
- Spider-Man Stuff.
This first hand data from eBay is fairly good at giving you an idea of what’s going on. However, I don’t know what they base their results on. It might be page views, watched items, or items that have sold. I recommend you actually look through some of the completed listings for any given item and work out an opinion for yourself. Pay particular attention to how many sold vs unsold listings there are. That should give you a basic idea of how much demand there is for a product vs how many people are selling it.
Best Selling Item Results From Terapeak
As you might expect, you’ll have to pay a fee for the item research software. Hammertap is $19.95 and Terapeak is $29.99 per month. However, both frequently offer 7 day free trials and you can do a lot of research in a week.
For our research software results we decided to use Terapeak. Their analysis tools offer a much more comprehensive insight to what’s in high demand on eBay than the Popular Item Page does. They can show you popularity by category, media, keyword searches, best-selling products, and best-selling titles. Here’s a look at the keyword results.
The top 10 hottest keyword results on the list are:
- Playstation 4.
- Xbox 360.
But keep in mind that’s just keywords that people are searching for. Although it’s valuable information, perhaps the more important question is: “What items are actually selling the most on eBay?” To answer that question let’s look at Terapeaks’s analysis of Category Demand.
Now that’s a completely different story. Although people are keyword searching mostly for expensive toys and jewelry, here’s what they’re actually buying ranked by the percent of sales success.
- Red Wines.
- Reward Points.
- Collectable Beer Cans.
- Magic Cards.
- T-shirt Presses.
- Sticky Notes.
- Kids Gymnastic Clothing.
- Cinderellas Stamps.
- Roman Antiques.
- Chinese Stamps.
What I’m getting at here is that now matter what approach you use it’s better to not only know what the hottest keyword searches are, but also which items have the highest actual demand or best listing to buyer ratio. Clearly there are already enough people selling Playstation and Xbox games. You could probably some make money selling them too because of the high demand, but if you happen to have some red wine, you’ll make way more money, and a lot more quickly. Being able to recognize demand, not just popularity is a valuable insight.
I hope I’ve helped you figure out what items are worth reselling for you. If so, you might also be interested in our article on Where to Find Things to Sell on eBay.
